We learned a great deal about Miami Beach's Art Deco heritage in a short time, met other admirers and had a pleasant walk in the area, all at the same time! Howard Brayer, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the building styles and history, and helped us understand and see the local buildings in a new way. We enjoyed, on our own subsequent walks, identifying for ourselves various buildings and architectural elements as Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival or Miami Modern.

While my husband and I were in Miami and staying in the Art Deco district, he suggested we take a Walking tour. I was the less enthusiastic of the two of us about the tour. However, as our very knowledgable guide, Howard Brayer, introduced the history and details of the buildings, I found myself increasingly interested in my surroundings. I looked at these buildings with 'fresh' eyes and not just as hotels or stores. If you are visiting Mami for the first time, it is worthwhile to take this walking tour with the Miami Design Preservation League. It was truly enjoyable!

Our wonderful, volunteer guide Paula, gave us some great information on the historical rise of Miami Beach from mosquito infested barrier island to the playground of the rich and famous. She showed us the differences between Art Deco and Miami Modern, as well as the other architectural style, Mediterranean Revival. Paula is a delight. If possible, take this tour early in your stay because as you walk Miami Beach throughout your stay, you will have a greater appreciation of your surroundings.
