The Official Art Deco Gift Shop

Founded in 1976, The Miami Design Preservation League has proudly offered guided walking tours of The Art Deco District for over 40 years. All Proceeds go towards supporting preservation. Visitors are introduced to the history, architecture, and preservation efforts of Miami Beach. Tour ticket includes free admission to the Art Deco Museum and Gift Shop. There are a limited amount of tickets available for each tour, so early bookings are encouraged . Please arrive 15 minutes prior to tour departure for check-in.

My wife, parents and I took the Art Deco Walking Tour the morning of Friday October 23rd. The tour guide is incredibly knowledgeable of the area and the art deco architecture. It is a very enjoyable and informative tour and the buildings are fantastic. Some of the highlights of the tour are going inside a couple of the buildings where fortunately there are still art deco features (sadly these are now few and far between). The tour guide has also wrote a book on the area which is available from the Art Deco Gift Shop and is very useful if you're staying in the area and gives information on other Art Deco buildings that you can view that are not included in the tour. The tour guide is also very happy to answer any questions and provide information after the tour. The tour does take place mostly outside so on hot/humid days it could be too much for some. Definitely take water with you and make sure you have applied a decent amount of factor 50 sun lotion. Some of the information on the location of the Art Deco Gift Shop is now incorrect due to them moving location. They're now on 1001 Ocean Drive (beach side) opposite 10th Street. Go into the gift shop to pay for the tour and wait. There are parking lots close by. I think we used one on 12th St. It was $5 when we arrived but they soon changed that to $10. I'd recommend getting there early to find parking (if you're driving) and to get to the gift shop and pay. If visiting Miami/Miami Beach I would consider this a must-do (along with the Charles Deering Estate and the Vizcaya Museum). After the tour we ate at the 11th St Diner (you'll pass it on the tour, shiny and silver, looks like an old railway carriage). The food was very good and the portions large.

When we showed up at the MDPL shop around 10 in the morning and asked for the MP3 players to do a walking tour at our own rythm (using also some documents I had checked before for extra information), the lady simply refused to rent the MP3 players to us and literally obliged us to take the guided tour, telling that that was the only option. I'm not a fan of such guided tours, so I tried to argue, but there was no possibility to rent the MP3's, so we ended up at the guided tour. What a disappointment. Maybe all togehter we walked one and a half or 2 mile, we got a lot of information that was not relevant to art deco (such as where to shop, where to eat, where to drink etc), but very little info about art deco. The guide was unable to answer questions about art deco. I'm living in Brussels (Belgium) myself in an art deco appartment building and was really looking forward to discover some aspects of tropical art deco. And I did, actually, afterwards, when I did the walk on my own, including in some places that were off the beach. So whatever the goals of he MPDL are (and I believe they have played an active role in the preservation of art deco), what they have made from it in practice is a tacky tourist shop ... and I just use that terminology to avoid calling it a tourist trap.

My husband and I did the walking tour of South Beach at 10:30am the first day we were in South Beach. It was very informational, and a great way to get a feel for the city and learn about Art Deco. Our tour was about two hours long and well worth the cost (around $20).
