The Official Art Deco Gift Shop

Founded in 1976, The Miami Design Preservation League has proudly offered guided walking tours of The Art Deco District for over 40 years. All Proceeds go towards supporting preservation. Visitors are introduced to the history, architecture, and preservation efforts of Miami Beach. Tour ticket includes free admission to the Art Deco Museum and Gift Shop. There are a limited amount of tickets available for each tour, so early bookings are encouraged . Please arrive 15 minutes prior to tour departure for check-in.

The Art Deco Walking Tour is a must see part of your South Beach experience. The tour guides are volunteers but they obviously love what they are doing and they are very knowledgeable about the history of the are and about the history of this style of architecture. Knowing the history of the buildings made all the difference in my appreciation of Miami Beach. On the tour you are shown some basic characteristics of the Art Deco style of architecture with a little bit of Mediterranean style mixed in. The tour guide also shared some information about how it was decided to preserve the art deco buildings. The most interesting part to me was the "who ate here" and "who stayed here" part of the tour. Our tour was on a Friday morning (June 13) and lasted about 2 hours. We had a great time interacting with people from a wide variety of cultures...

This morning my wife and I joined a group for a guided tour provided by the Miami Design Preservation League. I am sure that there are other tours, but only this one can be considered the most authentic. Afterall, the preservation of the Art Deco District of Miami Beach - all 800 Buildings - is due to the four decades of work done by this organization. It was an easy walking tour filled with insights on the history of this famous area and the beach community itself. There is a lot more to see, but the information offered the basics for us to continue up the beach to see the many other sites of Art Deco prominance. Miami Beach is still going through a renaissance and the Art Deco district is filled with half completed renovations and ones that still have to be made. Still, the ones that are completed are great. The tour gave us an opportunity to go into the boutique hotel lobbies and get pointers on what to look for. I understand that the location of the League is moving to new quarters and that their building on 10th and Ocean Drive is being rebuilt. I would check their site http://www.mdpl.org/ for more information. We enjoyed the 90 minutes and also the people we met on the tour. But, do it in the morning, since the heat and humidity can be tiring. Bring a bottle of water!

We took the tour in March, led by a volunteer guide who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He clearly loved showing off this unique area. Although scheduled for ninety minutes, the tour was closer to two hours. Although not a problem for us, there was a fair amount of walking. I think the tour would not interest young children. The guide gave us an overview of the area's history, art deco as a design style, and other types of architecture in the district. We went into several buildings which was interesting. My only "complaint" was that there was a lot of street noise and it was sometimes hard to hear and due to traffic it was hard to get unobstructed pictures of the building.
