While in Oahu our kids (ages 9, 11) snorkelled, surfed, rode ATVs, swam with sea turtles, saw dolphins... but the #1 thing they are still talking about and repeatedly say was their favourite is Toa Luau - especially our 9 year old who was gifted the 'tongs' used during the cultural demonstration and insisted on bring them all the back to Canada to show his class!
This was our first time in Hawaii so we cannot compare to other luaus, but we thoroughly enjoyed this for several reasons - the hands on cultural activities at the beginning (our kids loved it but note that people of all ages were participating, not just the kids!), the cultural demonstration around the firepit was very educational on the history and cultural significance (with a good dose of humour!) and they pulled the children up to front to make sure they could all see and hear. The food was excellent - plated vs buffet, but we were offered additional servings multiple times even though we could barely finish our first serving! The show after dinner - the enthusiasm, energy and talent of the performers (mostly family members, including the owner's two young daughters) was amazing. The whole experience felt small and family-like, we could see and hear what was going on no matter where we were seated, all of the staff /performers were friendly and approachable at all times, going out of their way to ensure we were having a good time, and we were happy to support a smaller family-run business.
We attended the 5pm show and enjoyed the botanical garden and waterfall in the afternoon. That meant a later end time, but we found the drive back to Waikiki at night was ok, mostly well lit/highway driving (we had a rental car though).
