We did the scenic trip (Class II and III) and I want to paint a picture about how awesome this company is. There were seven of us on the trip. I've never known my mom to be a physically active person but she still agreed to go because it was time with her granddaughters. My dad is a 100% disabled Vietnam vet. He just turned 72 and needed to take his hearing aids out for the trip. Yep, that means there was a disabled old deaf guy in the boat who may not hear instructions well. My daughters are 5, 7, and 10 and the two youngest don't know how to swim yet. I'm 350 pounds and I turned their largest dry suit into a sausage casing. My wife is perfect, but the rest of us would not have been a huge help if something turned south. Thankfully, we were never in any danger because the guides were on point. Let me tell you a bit more about the trip itself before giving you my final verdict. The Trip The first thing you need to know about this trip is that the water is legitimately COLD. The water was frozen glacier 24 hours before your boat touches down. That means it's cold and in contrast to the lower 48, does not fluctuate based on rainfall. They say to dress warm and that's no joke. The dry suit keeps you dry, but that's it; the clothes you wear underneath keep you warm so seriously put on the layers. Thankfully we followed that advice and other than our hands, we all stayed warm enough. The second thing you need to know about the trip is that the guides are EXCEPTIONAL. I've done numerous trips in the lower 48 and I'm used to whitewater coming as the result of rocks in the river. This water is different because it's flow from a melted glacier and bounces off the banks and rock walls so you have waves coming from all directions at any time. Our guide could angle the boat to keep us dry or get us soaked. He was able to use the waves to set us up for the next one and we never had a close call with falling in. Our guide checked in with us constantly through the trip and was willing to add or take away the excitement based on how the whole group felt. The third thing you need to know is that it was as EDUCATIONAL as it was exciting. There is a lot of history to the trip and our guide was able to talk about Alaska, glaciers, Geology, volcanoes, and animal wildlife. My wife and I are both educators and we're suckers for experiential learning like this because it helps my daughters to appreciate and protect our wilderness. The Verdict This was our first rafting trip in Alaska so I can't compare it to other companies in Denali. However, I have been on Class VI and V rapids in the lower 48 so it wasn't my first rodeo. I assumed the smaller rapids on this trip would be too tame for us, but because of the water dynamics it didn't disappoint. I know this company offers a trip with bigger rapids, but this was a great trip in itself and shouldn't be overlooked. The whole crew was kind and friendly and so supportive of our ragtag outfit. The price is comparable to what I've paid for other trips in other states so I don't feel cheated at all. In the end, it was money well spent. If you have any doubts about whether you can do this trip or not, look again at my description of the seven of us who went. Life is about our memories and I'll treasure these always. Best trip every trip.
