I love surfing and want my kids to appreciate it as much as I do so I thought that it would be better to have someone else teach them. My older one learned back home but my younger one had not so we decided to take the advice of the concierge at the Kahala and try Gone Surfing.
Usually, when I have stayed at the Moana Surfrider, I just go to the board rental adjacent and paddle out early to Canoes to avoid the crowds. With Gone Surfing, you go out next to the Outrigger to Pops. Along with our board rentals, we were given each rash guards which was really good for sun protection, too. My younger son had his lesson with Shawn who has a great personality and made it super easy for my son to catch waves. With a quick on land lesson, he went out with Shawn who did all of the work to paddle them out and stood up on his first wave. Shawn helped him catch a lot of waves which was fantastic because I want him to love the ocean and surfing and look forward to next summer of Junior Lifeguards. Mission accomplished. Mahalo to Shawn for that and also knowing when he should stop. My younger son has about 2% body fat so he gets cold quickly, even in the warm waters of Hawaii. I had a little longer session surfing on my own and was greeted by my son upon exiting that we had to buy package B showing his surfing in photographs and video. Usually, I roll my eyes whenever he asks me to buy him something. But, I have to recommend Clarence, the photographer, because he showed my son why he fell at times and what to do to stay up longer. All around, we highly recommend Shawn and the Gone Surfing staff as well as Clarence who has his own outfit for making great memories and starting my son on the right foot.
