Преглед
Trace the steps of the Black Portlanders who moved our city, state, and country closer to the ideals of freedom, democracy, opportunity, and equality. Maine’s earliest settlements couldn’t have existed without Black labor, skill, and insight. You'll meet the Black Yankees who founded Maine communities, overturned slavery statewide, drove our maritime industries, gained political influence, crossed color boundaries, and expanded Mainers’ rights in the modern era.

Stepping on granite cobblestones crooked with age — that once saw footfalls from national heroes like Frederick Douglass — you’ll pass storefronts once home to Black-owned barbershops where abolitionists whispered intelligence to Underground Railroad conductors.

Enjoy 2 hours of entertaining and enlightening historical narration over a 1.5-mile route. Owner and guide, Dugan Murphy, dug through the archives to present an amazing constellation of stories left out of most tours. TripAdvisor named him Portland's #1 guide!

I had a great time on Dugan's carefully researched and thoughtfully presented Black History walking tour of Portland. I would highly recommend it to both tourists and Portland residents alike! Dugan has a knack for weaving together stories about the lives of people in Maine in ways that engage, inspire curiosity, and surprise the listener. I'd say this tour is one of the most meaningful two hours you could spend acquainting yourself with Portland past and present.

This tour was amazing! I had no idea that Portland, Maine had so much Black history! Our tour guide, Dugan, was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and easy to understand. His skills in leading historical tours and his passion for history made this experience come to life! Dugan set appropriate guidelines for and to respect the history and the historical figures we encountered. He made sure we had a safe space to ask questions and discuss sometimes difficult truths. Our tour took us to places tucked away in spots that contain so much history but are away from the hustle, bustle, noise, and tourism of the main streets. If you are looking for a true Portland, Maine experience, whether you are local or visiting from elsewhere, this is an easy tour to book, but impossible to forget!

The Black community has an incredible amount of history in Portland, and thanks to Dugan's extensive research, I feel like I now have a much better understanding of this important piece of our collective history. I am not a "history person," but the tour was grounded enough in the stuff that I (kind of?) remember from high school that I was able to take in all the extra details and research that gave real value and depth to the tour. I have already recommended this tour to my coworkers and I plan to bring my folks next time they visit!

Black history is American history, and that is so evident in my hometown when you know where to look. I look forward to guiding your folks and coworkers through these places and sharing some amazing stories with them as well. Stay curious!
