Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Seward Round-Trip Same Day Return

Departing from downtown Anchorage, the Coastal Classic Train travels south along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords – before departing on the return journey at 6 pm that evening, arriving back to Anchorage by 10:15 pm.

Breakfast on the train was good and the views were awesome. The town doesn’t have a lot to offer but was nice. Glad for the free shuttle service.

The trip was amazing if you VIP. The train ride itself doesn't offer the The views that as a visitor we wanted. VIP round trip offered 2 drinks per passenger, breakfast and dinner. Well worth it. The views, sun rise, sun set breathtaking! Staff was friendly and outgoing mostly. Clean bathrooms. Not a lot to do in Seward as we had driven down the day before and did the wilderness conservation enter and Portage cruise which saved us some money if you're driving. We used the free shuttle in Seward and gift shopped and enjoyed the food.

Loved riding the train. Our first leg was very enjoyable, scenic and relaxing! Our way back was different. I know you can’t control passengers but we were stuck in the middle of a car with kids who were very loud and disruptive. We had 6 adults with us and these kids were yelling running around. I am having a problem with one leg and ones of kids kicked me in that leg. Dad tried to control-Mom not so much. Couldn’t relax at all
