Преглед
The Andrew Low House can be seen by docent led tours, which depart at 30 minute intervals (on the hour and half hour) every day. Tours discuss the history of the house and the Low family, showing how a wealthy family in Savannah would have lived in the 19th century.
The home was built in 1848-1849 by architect John S Norris a notable architect from New York and designed in the Greek Revival style, with a mixture of Revival and Italianate details. The home occupies the entire southwest trust lot fronting on Lafayette Square.
The Andrew Low House has one of the few surviving original gardens created in 19th-century Savannah, and the only one open to the public. The design of the parterre gardens dates from the mid century, shortly after the completion of the house. Their layout and planting plans have been preserved ever since, first by the Low family and later by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America, the current owners of the house

A visit to lovely Savannah would not be complete without a 40 minute docent-led tour of the historic Andrew Low House. Andrew Low's son William and Juliette Gordon Low the famous founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA inherited the home after his passing. Guest will experience a guided tour by knowledgeable docents departing about every 30 minute (on the hour and half hour) every day. Tours discuss the history of the house and the Low family, showing how they lived in the 19th century as well as those enslaved who lived and labored at the home. First floor rooms include the family’s formal and informal parlors, the library and dining room. Upstairs are a children’s playroom and a rare-for-the-period indoor bathroom, and bedrooms, two of which were once occupied by notable guests of the family.

I loved this tour. The house was beautiful, the tour was informative, and not all about the Girl Scouts. Our docent was very passionate, knowledgeable about the architecture, and encouraged questions.

We waited with a crowd of 16 or more to enter in the tiny store. Once we entered, the space again, was too small for this crowd. The tour guide spoke quickly and did not tell the story of the house in a smooth transitioning. It was hard to enjoy in the crowd. We were offered to roam about after the tour. I noticed most of our group leaving in a disgruntled manor. Plenty of potential for this tour. The poor execution made it feel like a rip off.

I am so sorry to hear you were not happy with your visit to the museum. Following the effects of COVID of this past year we are so grateful to be busy again and to see many tourists visiting not only our museum but also Savannah again. Guests are welcome to wait for their tour not only in the gift shop which is part of the original aesthetics of the home but also in the museums lovely enclosed courtyard. We hope during your next visit to Savannah you will give a visit to the Andrew Low House another opportunity to have a better experience and would like to extend complimentary tickets to you to do so. Please reach out to me for assistance. I will be happy to help. [email protected]

I have been in many historic homes like the Andrew Low house. Most historic homes are fairly similar, the difference being the story and details the tour guide can provide about the people who lived there. Our guide dispensed with a hello or an introduction and launched into a machine gun-like recitation of facts lasting perhaps five minutes. Then she said we were free to roam about, and could learn more from the QR codes we’d find around the house. She remained on the first floor in case we had questions. In the rest of the house there was no curation, no placards, no explanatory notes by room entrances or under portraits. I heard one confused older lady asking her middle aged daughter how the QR codes worked, which were on a table in the hallway. My guess is the place is a pilgrimage for Girl Scouts who come no matter what the tour offers, so the guides can phone it in - literally. Maybe they already know extensive details about Juliette Gordon Low is, maybe they are young enough that they prefer QR codes to a guided tour. It’s a shame because they have a lot to work with at this site: the house is beautiful and many of the furnishings are original to the family. We were out of there in less than 15 minutes both felt it was one of the worst home tours we had been on.

I am so sorry to hear you did not have the experience your were hoping for while visiting our museum. As we move forward following COVID we were able to make a few adjustments for social distancing concerns that work with most of our visitors, however our tours are still conducted by our museum tour guides. We do apologize that you were given less than what your expected. The home has an abundance of history and understand you were hoping to garner this during your visit. I would like to offer complimentary tickets to you in hopes during your next visit to Savannah you will give the Andrew Low House another try for a better experience. Please contact me [email protected]. I will be happy to help.
