We highly recommend hiring a tour company for Cathedral Valley and Bentonite Hills. We rented a Jeep, but as soon as we arrived at the river crossing, we realized we didn’t want to take the risk of crossing it. Thank goodness we didn’t start from Caineville, because it would have taken us to the river at the end of the loop in the dark, which would have meant we would have had to spend the night in the car. So, we turned around and hired Mel to take us to Cathedral Valley, and we are so glad we did. Not only was the river crossing treacherous, but the trail itself was beyond our off-road driving skills, with high sand dunes and large holes, especially around the Temples. The area is stunning. We wish we had spent more time in Capitol Reef instead of Zion. Zion was awfully crowded, while in Cathedral Valley, we saw maybe two other vehicles. We highly recommend Capitol Reef over the overcrowded Zion and Bryce. For your off-road adventures, Mel was a lifesaver
