Big Bus hop-ons in other cities have been great experiences and we carry extra bills for tips. On a recent DC trip during the week of Labor Day, there was no need to tip either the driver or non-existant narrator. The Cons of the DC BB company: the buses are showing their age as evidenced by appearance and cantankerous gears. On two very warm days, only one bus had air conditioning working in the lower level; the others were just sorry. The worst ride took over an hour to go from the Washington Monument to Union station; those on top roasted in the sun and the ones below were cooked in an enclosed space with windows that did not open. Many of the buses had advertising "screening" on the sides so those riding below saw all the sites through dotted windows and could not take pictures. Finally, it appeared to be a training week for both new drivers and guides. The drivers had difficulty with tickets, most failed to mention the importance of the free earpieces and audio system. or needed more instruction on how to safely move out of the way for emergency vehicles. There was only one live narrator during our two days and his presence became evident only at the end of the ride. Most noticeable were the lack of smiles and sense of welcome on any of the buses. We chose Big Bus because since it offered a second route through Georgetown; it was not worth it. The other company had newer buses with better seating options, more frequent buses on the route and passengers who looked happy. Next time we will use the other company.

We purchased the 2 day trip. We were given tickets to the wax museum and an extra day for free. It was very hot that week (upper 90s) and the sun was hot! We tried riding on top but it was really just too hot that week. One time we got on an air conditioned bus with a great guide. We planned to go around the entire loop and then make stops. The bus stopped and made us switch buses to a bus with little air conditioning but the windows opened. We got off at the next stop. The next bus we got on had a guide that seemed to fuss the entire time. She talked about the stops and when the last bus was for the day. She threw in some history here and there. We got off again. The last time we tried the bus we got on a bus without working air and the windows didn't open. We got off as soon as possible. It was unbearably hot. I am from South Carolina so I'm used to heat but this was ridiculous. Our last day in DC we used the public bus, circulator. It's free and the driver told us a lot of history. It also had good air conditioning. I would not recommend big bus.

Took the 2 day pass for Washington DC. Should have taken the 3 day, cause if you really want to see everything you probably need 4-5 days. Once we realized that we had to catch the bus in DC ( we were staying in Alexandria) we found out that we needed to take the Water Taxi over to the Wharf, which was a really nice trip and quite inexpensive, plus we had a coupon with our bus ticket, for a free round trip ticket. We did the Red and Blue lines. Very informative and the Bus app is helpful.
