Full confession - was expecting a grizzled old vet to tour us around the city and was surprised when we first saw our tour guide - Clay is a much younger man than I expected. Any hesitation I might have had about his grasp of the city's history was quickly dispelled with his passion and knowledge of the sites, actions, and history of this important location. Clay took us to a number of locations that wouldn't necessarily make one's googled list of tour sites, but were all part of Birmingham's difficult history as the city fought itself over race relations and the civil rights struggle. We saw both well known locations as well as places off the beaten path. You will not get a sugar coated version of the struggle on this tour and it's refreshing to hear all the pain, anger and hurt that went into the political and economic struggle in the city. Clay's clearly passionate about this tour and he freely shares his thoughts and knowledge about what happened during such a violent period of time in the history, and more importantly, why it happened. Highly recommend.
