What a fantastic tour! This is definitely a must do if you’re interested in the civil rights movement and only have a day or two in Birmingham! My tour guide, Clay, picked me up and as it turns out I was the only one on the tour! What’s good about the company is that they still offer tours for just one person which nowhere else in America seems to do. Clay told me so much about the history of Birmingham and Alabama in three hours right down to the finest details; I love learning about history so it was fascinating from start to finish. As well as some key sites which played a huge roll in the movement, we also visited inner city neighbourhoods which, during the 50s and 60s, where segregated all black or all white. It was an excellent tour and what makes it so unique is that Clay spent 6 months reading books and articles and watching documentaries about the civil rights history in order to do these tours!
After the tour, Clay offered to drop me off anywhere I wanted to go and I told him I was going to this BBQ place for its unique food. He told me that it was okay but not the best and he recommended Saw’s Soul Kitchen. He was telling me all about the unique Alabama food there as he actually offers a BBQ tour and Saw’s is his first stop on the tour. He was kind enough to not only take me there but he asked for the special which he offers to his tour group and sat and ate lunch with me before dropping me back where I needed to be. The food was all delicious and I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to try it if it hadn’t been for Clay as it wasn’t within walking distance. I had a fantastic time and I can’t thank Clay enough!
