I think overall it was a nice experience, my tour guide was super nice, and knowledge and lovely.
I went to lean about the Gullah community but it was all told from a completely white point of view. All of the artisan businesses were also white, my tour guide was white, and we interacted with no one from the Gullah community or a Gullah business. I understand that the Gullah community keeps to themselves, but we didn’t actually get to support the actual community or get a good understanding from their point of view. Also, at one point the tour guide was talking about the only female slave owner on the island and how she was a “good slave owner,” there is no such thing as a good slave owner. Slavery was utterly atrocious, I don’t care if she didn’t sell off other human beings to other plantations, she purchased human beings for sale that were forcefully removed from their homes, packed like cargo on ships and forced to work in South Carolina. She was not good, and words matter.
