This 4.5 hour Daufuskie Island trip provides a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of Lowcountry history on the undeveloped side of the island. Learn the rich history of the Native Americans, European settlers, the cotton trade, and the Gullah culture. We encourage you to wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring water, snacks, and sunscreen.

Daufuskie Island

It begins with a boat ride from Shelter Cove Marina to the back side of Daufuskie Island. The ride is an important part of the tour! Along the way we will stop for dolphins and other wildlife, plus view and discuss the sites on Daufuskie and the neighboring islands that are best seen from the water. Once on Daufuskie, you'll get on golf carts and take a tour of the historic, undeveloped side of the island. We stop at all of the significant historic sites and artisan shops of Daufuskie.

Captain Pete was quite knowledgeable about the island and it's history. Visiting the island is like a trip back to a more simple point in time. Very rustic yet charming.

My husband and I went on the tour with J.O. The fact that J.O. had lived on the island was a definite plus for this tour as he had lots of insight into the history. A favorite stop was the school building where we learned about the process of making indigo. The boat ride itself was an added bonus to the tour.

The boat ride is an hour each way. The tour guide wasn’t very enthusiastic and didn’t seem interested in answering questions. At least half the time on the island was going to places which were selling things. We learned some interesting facts about the history of the island but the part of the island we saw was very run down and somewhat deserted.
