Tucked between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, and accessible only by boat, Daufuskie Island is a real gem. This 4.5 hour Daufuskie Island trip provides a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of Lowcountry history on the undeveloped side of the island. Learn the rich history of the Native Americans, European settlers, the cotton trade, and the Gullah culture. We encourage you to wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring water, snacks, and sunscreen.

Daufuskie Island

It begins with a boat ride from Shelter Cove Marina to the back side of Daufuskie Island. The ride is an important part of the tour! Along the way we will stop for dolphins and other wildlife, plus view and discuss the sites on Daufuskie and the neighboring islands that are best seen from the water. Once on Daufuskie, you'll get on golf carts and take a tour of the historic, undeveloped side of the island. We stop at all of the significant historic sites and artisan shops of Daufuskie.

Our boat captain and tour guide was Pete. He was first of all, very professional, from the safety orientation to the explanation of what was to take place and how to prepare for maximum benefit was well done. He is very knowledgeable about the topics related to the tour. I was surprised that he did not shy away from or give a vanilla overview of the challenges that the oppressed people of the area encountered during their servitude.

I had read a great deal about the Gullah-Geechee history before visiting Hilton Head, but actually seeing it--and experiencing its legacy--was surprisingly difficult. It still lives on Dafuskie Island. Captain Pete is a marvelous guide and extremely competent boat captain, and his reverence for the the local people and culture is obvious. Dafuskie Island is a place time has, in large part, overlooked. It is accessible only by boat. No other place like it in the HH area. Most enjoyable boat ride and tour on a nice Fall day. If you have any interest whatsoever in a mostly vanished lifestyle and taking a time machine back a couple of hundred years, you will enjoy this tour.

This was an amazing afternoon! We learned so much about Daufuskie Island and its it's history from Captain Pete. A beautiful boat ride over to the island and then several hours on the island exploring it by golf cart. Stopping often to see and hear the history from Captain Pete. Enjoyed the little stores on the island also. What a great little hidden gem and we left knowing we wanted to come back soon! Captain Pete was a great guide. A great job of making the afternoon interesting for both the adults and kids. Thanks for the great experience!
