Wherever you are in the Zulu Kingdom you are no more than 3 hours from Africa’s iconic Big 5. Today, however, you shall be a whole lot closer. It is a 05h00 start. As you know wildlife, especially predators, are most active around dawn and dusk.

The Big 5 Bucketlist Safari gives you the best chance to see the Big 5 on a day tour within KwaZulu Natal. Enter into a Premier Private Game Reserve and meet your knowledgeable ranger. Listen to a briefing on game drive etiquette before you start your 3 hour morning safari.

Your ranger will track wildlife while keeping tabs on sightings throughout the reserve giving you the best chance to be in the right place at the right time. This reserve only permits travellers staying at their luxury lodges to traverse the park, unless you’re with us of course.

Time for lunch. After lunch we’re heading deeper into the reserve. Embark on another 3 hour game drive focusing on different game. At approximately 16h00 we will depart for Durban.

Ivor was AWESOME. Knowledgeable, funny, honest, quite amazing. I'm in AWE of what we saw and the patience of our guide. My husband and I came to a mining conference (i was the one that had to attend), and it was always a distant dream to have a safari experience. We didn't want to go too far from Cape Town and Zululand became an easy target for this adventure. WOW! It was everything i had hoped for and more. I guess what made it special was the absolute professionalism of the guide and the driver, but what was even more interesting to a couple of independent Canadians was that it was AUTHENTIC. Not a super luxurious tour, but it was a great day and go about 10 feed from a pride of LIONS! Saw LIONS! Zebras, Giraffes (walked right in front of the land cruiser and didn't even blink), Ostrich, Impala's, White Rhino, African Buffalo, Wildebeest, Warthogs (many), Kudu and many more incredible animals and beautiful and spectacular birds. Thank you for an amazing experience. Next time we'll make it a longer stay. Thank you Thabo and Ivor. Great memories.

I wish we would have gone on an early in the morning drive. I know it was the fault of Oceana Cruises getting into port late, not the fault of our guide.

Hi Linda. Thanks for taking the time to review us. As you mentioned, due to the ship arriving later than expected, it resulted in us reaching at the game reserve later than we would have liked. Considering we are in peak summer (it's super hot), wildlife tend to take cover as we get into the middle of the day. As a result, big cat sightings tend to be much harder. It is for this reason that we depart at promptly 05h00 and get to the reserve as early as possible to give you the best chance big cat sightings. Unfortunately this is one of those things that are out of our hands: your cruise ship timing delays and seasonal weather. Justin @ Wild Routes Africa

The drive was long from Durban but the landscape was lovely to look at. Our guide was Ivor who was friendly, great and knowledgable. We have been on many safaris around Africa and we still learnt knew details! We saw lions, and cheetah (my favourite) buffalo, many antelope including many Kudu, giraffe and rhino, We hope to return to Durban with a friend who has never been on safari and this will be a perfect trip for her to do with us.
