The tour guides make the experience, yet they are forced to work in extreme weather conditions, even if only 1 person shows up for the 90 minute tour. Their wages are being undercut by discounted tickets and if they cannot find their own replacements they must lead tours even if they are sick. Not only does this impair their health, but also exposes all of the tour group to illness. They cannot use mics, in the interests of historical authenticity, even though 21st century Boston is far, far noisier than colonial Boston. Many of these guides are professionally trained actors and the strain this causes to their voices impairs their ability to make a living at their chosen work. The Freedom Trail Foundation refuses to negotiate in good faith on these and other important issues. Please let the Foundation know that these are unacceptable working conditions. There would be no tour without the skilled work of the guides. They deserve to be treated with respect.
