My son (age 17) and I did the self-guides sunrise bike tour. The guides are great. Very knowledgeable & friendly. My only complaint is that we didn’t get to spend enough time at the top of Haleakala to see the crater in all of its glory in the daylight. We had to rush down to where we started the bike ride right after sunrise. On top of that, we were in the clouds & fog for the start of our ride, which didn’t make for very pretty, traditionally sunny Maui scenery. When we stopped in the historic town on our way down, all of the shops were closed bc it was only 8am or so & everything opens at 10 - disappointing. And, it rained on us the last couple of miles which wasn’t much fun. Riding on wet roads was a bit scary + being pelted in the face by the rain AND having water from the roads splash into our faces from the front tire & up our butt/back from the back tire sucked too. We looked like we had peed ourselves when we finished! Haha The bike ride is still worth it - we did self-guided. I would just recommend trying to go later in the day, if that’s an option to get more sun & daylight on the mountain + the chance to visit the little boutique stores in the historic village. The sunrise was cool, but not all that spectacular IMO. The bikes & gear were top notch. Mona bikes, motorbike helmets, gloves & windbreakers. Definitely bring snacks as they don’t provide anything. The safety lesson was spot on. I always felt safe & aware of how to traverse the mountain thx to the guides. Would definitely recommend this group!!
