Looking for something to do on our first day on Hilton Head Island, we made the decision to try our hand at shrimp trawling. We chose the 1PM time slot, a beautiful day in the mid 80’s, made our way to the Tammy Jane. Smaller than I had imagined, but enough room for the crew of three and around 18 other passengers. The crew was great, answering any initial questions we had, and fully explaining every piece of equipment and it’s use. We motored out maybe a half hour from the dock, they deployed the nets, then we enjoyed the scenery for another 45 minutes, hoping that we were catching a boatload of shrimp! Well, although yesterday’s morning excursion netted 65 pounds, I was disappointed to see that we had only managed to catch around 5 pounds. We helped pull the heads off the shrimp, then the catch was split equitably between the four groups of us who wanted to take some home. We fully enjoyed the excursion, a great learning experience. I only gave it four stars because of my disappointment with the size of our catch, but that’s fishing!
