Key West Aquarium

Tours offered every half hour throughout the day. (See below for tour types) Shark feedings occur daily at 11am, 1pm, 3pm, and 4:30pm. Touch Tank/Aquarium History: Learn the aquarium history (first opened air aquarium in the United States), the importance of the frescos. Atlantic Shores Interactive Feed: Learn the importance of the mangrove eco system, allow guest the opportunity to feed some of our large game and tropical fish while discussing the variety of fish in the exhibit. Shark Interactive Feeding: Guides will explain the importance of sharks to our waters while allowing guests to feed and touch a live shark! Sea Turtle Conservation Tour: Learn the Aquarium’s role in the conservation efforts of these species. Stingray interactive Feedings: Interact with our stingrays by feeding and petting these animals. The Atlantic Shores Exhibit is a cross section of a near shore mangrove environment. The 50,000 gallon tank holds a variety of tropical fish and game fish.

Rather disappointing. Understand facility was badly damaged by hurricane Irma and undergoing renovation which is expected to be completed by summer 2021. Small tanks were interesting but labelling was poor and hard to read. Outside area was closed due to reconstruction. Guides not very interesting - seemed bored! Thought the price was high for what was available. Guide said could have ticket stamped for free admission when work if finished. think it would be better to have offered lower rate now. shark tank was quite interesting.

While the aquarium is small, it was not advertised as anything larger than what it was on their website, so we were not disappointed. In fact, we were surprised and intrigued when Rae came out to feed the shark. She was very knowledgeable about the sharks and it was evident she loves her job and truly cares about the animals!

The KW Aquarium is a small attraction (for an aquarium) in the Mallory Square area of KW. As a long time visitor to KW, I knew this aquarium had in the past fallen into a state of disrepair and I think outright abandonment for awhile. It had become an embarrassment for the Keys residents and an eyesore in the Mallory area. A few years ago, the community decided this needed to be corrected, and it was a pleasure to see the progress that has been made on my recent visit. There are nice presentations of some representative sea creatures, and though C19 has restricted some features like the touch tank (for the rays), it was a nice diversion from the usual KW bars and tacky tourist draws. We got out of the hot sun for awhile and my 2 year old was absolutely delighted with the creatures! I suppose you could quibble about spending $15-18 for admission on a small attraction, but I figured that was about 2 drinks (maybe) equivalent. And for our 2 year old admission was free. It was nice to see a working aquarium in this space instead of dry, cracked concrete holes. The staff is very friendly but are also very serious (as they should be) about the current rules about social distancing and masks. I look forward to seeing this place thrive as I think it's needed for a full, well rounded KW experience.
