Because Key Largo was our first destination out of our home area since the pandemic took hold, we looked for outdoor activities. This 3 hour tour was ideal. We booked and paid ahead for 3 adults online. We gathered at the Outfitter’s Store, signed releases, and looked at lots of good gear for sale. There is a nice outhouse out back, if needed. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Life vests are included. A van transports the kayakers to the Pennekamp Park, a few minutes away. Lots of sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and water shoes all useful. Dry bags are available to use on your kayak, just ask.
There were 10 people in our group, but 2 tandems. Our guide, Janet, was outstanding. Her voice carried well over the water. She was knowledgeable about plants and fish. We saw a manatee, a shark, jellyfish, needlefish, parrotfish.....no gators or snakes tho. Janet pointed out creatures swimming by or even on the bottom. It’s very shallow. We were fortunate to enjoy a very pleasant morning, no wind, and calm, calm, water, so the trip was not rigorous. However, a tandem with a strong paddler in the rear helped me cruise along swiftly! It was a very quiet, serene paddling trip for the most part; the waterway was not crowded or noisy on our weekday morning. However, the Pennekamp Park boat was just leaving and it looked huge next to our kayaks!
