Greatland Adventures

The Matanuska Glacier is one of Alaska's premiere destinations. At 27 miles long and 4 miles wide it is Alaska's largest glacier accessible by road. It also is boasts one of the most accessible areas to walk on of any glacier in Alaska. Marvel at ice that formed thousands of years ago high in the Chugach Mountains.

Your day will start with a magnificent scenic drive along the Glenn Highway with stunning mountain vistas and plenty of time for photo stops. Next we will drive to the toe of the glacier to dawn our ice cleats and begin exploring the glacier by foot. Each day is unique due to the dynamic nature of the glacier. We generally spend two hours and walk three miles on the ice. After exploring the glacier we will have lunch at a local eatery with stunning views of the glacier and surrounding scenery. Each tour will be customized to suit your groups interest. This is a once in a lifetime bucket list opportunity to explore glacial ice!

Steve and his team did an amazing job coordinating the glacier tour. Our tour guide for the day, Jonathon, was super knowledgeable and attentive to our questions/curiosities. We also attempted to see the northern lights as part of the Northern Lights Tour. Although we weren't able to see them, due to unfavorable weather conditions (thanks mother nature), Steve and his team were professional and kept us informed about our chances to view the lights. We definitely recommend this tour company! We had a great experience!

We are really glad you had a great time on the glacier. Apologies that we couldn't get you out on a tour to see the lights. We strive to only operate this tour on nights that have a reasonable expectation of seeing the lights. We often cancel the tour due to cloudy skies or low aurora activity. When this does happen a full refund is given for the tour. We do recommend staying at least 3-5 nights to increase you chances of being here on a favorable night. We hope you can come back and join us in the future.

I took the winter hike on the Matanuska Glacier, it was awesome. The hike in the glacier was a great experience, the views of the glacier are great. My guide Sydney was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Greatland adventures provide clothing for this experience, thanks to this I was warm during the whole tour. Also, even if I was the only person in the tour, it was not cancelled, so it turned into a private tour. Definitely I will recommend going to Matanuska if you are in Anchorage during the winter.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Yes, we sometimes operate tours of only 1 person even though this ends up being a financial loss for our company. I had booked a private tour, but when I talked to my child the day before because he was sick, he suggested a number of things I could do from that point on. As a beginner glacier and non-English native speaker, I was very heartened by the ease and reliability with which I was able to consult via text. Stephen, our guide, was familiar with travel and the outdoors and was interested in and understanding different cultures. Professionally, his guide allowed us to truly enjoy the nature of Alaska. It was such a wonderful experience. Thank you.
