The tour covers 3 boroughs by bus. It’s nice to get outside of Manhattan but not much time is spent at any one site.
Went to Harlem first, quick visit to Apollo Theatre. Saw Yankee stadium, from quite far to be honest.
Then things got a bit weird. After lunch we were in Brooklyn. The tour guide pointed out the area was predominantly populated with haisidic Jews. The tour guide started by talking about the culture and traditions, however the commentary was less factual and unnecessarily judgemental and opinionated. For example she asked the bus to “look to your left, there’s a little boy with the hair”. She added she’d read an article about their school system not teaching the children the proper curriculum. Everything she talked about painted the community in a very negative way, and this was the only neighbourhood where she spoke this way. In other neighbourhoods she spoke about the positive effects individuals made, but in respect of the Hasidic community it was very prejudiced and opinionated. I’m sure she wasn’t intentionally anti- semitic but it was very uncomfortable and unnecessary. It spoilt the first half of the tour for us.
