My 14 year old grandson and I arrived at the beautiful Garden of the Gods park to explore some on our own. At the visitors center we discovered we could go rock climbing, something neither of us had ever done. I phoned Front Range Climbing Co. to book a tour. Patrick was very helpful and less than two hour later, we were meeting our terrific guide Molly. She had all the necessary gear, including shoes and helmets. Molly was great with my grandson (a natural at this) and even greater with me (a slow plodder). She connected right away with my grandson and her instructions prior to the climbs were helpful and clear. Molly's always positive and encouraging words helped us to succeed in our first ever rock climbing experience. She literally coached me up, shouting up suggested footholds, handholds, and moments to rest. We did two climbs each on the Tower of Babel rock formation (75 ft & 100 ft). The views were fantastic and the dramatic distant thunderstorm even added to the experience. I never had a moment of fear with our guide's expert hands on the rope as I climbed that magnificent red rock wall. Molly was the perfect guide for us and I'd certainly ask for her again. Personal notes: No way (or need) to carry a purse and I'd recommend taking off rings, watches, and any bracelets. The rock is rough on them. I wore shorts (most do), but loose lightweight hiking pants would've been nice to avoid some minor scrapes. Careful with cameras that could get banged around on the rock and even cell phones/cameras in pockets can work themselves out as you're climbing. Same for wallets in pockets. All our personal items were safe with the guide as we climbed. Most important is to bring water, plenty of it. The altitude, heat, and exertion all will take their toll without enough water. Have fun!
