We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Mt. Vernon. We did the tour of the mansion. So cool to see the house and grounds. The docents were very knowledgeable and gave us many insights to Washington, his family, and the times they lived in. After touring the house, we walked around the grounds which are just beautiful. The highlight after seeing the house was Washington's tomb. Very moving. We also enjoyed the people in period costumes. It added a sense or realism.
One thing we didn't catch when ordering tickets, the time given for the tour is the time you get in line, not the time of your tour. It can still be quite a wait for your tour as they take groups of 20 from the line.
We were disappointed that the front of the house was being renovated and was covered with scaffolding, but that is understandable, at least we got great photos on the Potomac side.
The only other thing that was distracting was that the guides seemed disorganized. Throughout the tour, guides were coming and going and expressing that they were not sure where they were supposed to be, or telling others where they should be. Not sure if it was just a crazy day, or this is ongoing. This was the reason I gave 4/5. Otherwise it was fantastic!
