As part of your visit, you will also have the chance to try your hand at gold panning. Learn the techniques utilized by prospectors and experience the thrill of discovering gold for yourself (and keep your GOLD).

During the summer months, spend some quality time with our friendly burros, who love to roam around the site. These adorable miniature donkeys will bring a smile to your face as you pet and feed them.

In the midst of the majestic Rocky Mountains, the Country Boy Mine was one of the largest and most famous gold mines in Breckenridge, Colorado. Today, we invite you to visit the Country Boy Mine and enjoy the many activities the mine has to offer. Join us for a mine tour into a real gold mine at this historic restored mining site. While at the mine you can also gold pan, pet the burros, slide down the 55 foot ore chute, explore the authentic mine site, view the exhibits and equipment that were used in the mine and visit the general store. The Country Boy Mine has been offering mine tours for over 20 years. The Country Boy Mine is located 2 miles from downtown Breckenridge in Summit County, Colorado.

This is the real deal mine. Not fancy piled rocks old machines. The boys loved search for gold. Nice change from retail trap of downtown.

We came to the mine late in the day so we were only able to pan for gold for about an hour but it was SO much fun! We had 3 kids - a 3 year old (who could pan for free! Yay!), a 6 year old and a 10 year old. The 3 year old had fun playing in the creek but couldn’t stay interested in the actual panning. The older two kids LOVED it! We found tons of little pieces of fools gold and a few pieces of real gold (at least, we think it’s real gold, ha!). All in all, it’s a great place for families! I knocked it one star because it’s definitely a bit pricy - $20/child to pan for gold.

We recently visited Breckenridge for a short vacation. We stopped at the Country Boy mine right after they opened and were pleased to discover we were the only participants that early in the day. We suited up in the provided rain coats and hard hats and entered the mine. The tour was very informative and the guide was great about getting the kids involved - letting them hold things, ask tons of questions, etc. We had a wonderful time and all left with an appreciation of how difficult things must have been for the early miners. After the tour, they brought the donkey out for the kids to pet, showed them how to pan for gold in the little pond and let them play on the grounds. Besides the tour, the kids loved the big slide and the chance to try to hit it rich. Be warned that the mine is chilly and wet. You should come prepared with close-toed, walking shoes and consider wearing pants. The tour isn’t very long but temps are in the mid-40s deeper in the mine. We’d also suggest going earlier in the day. The tour after ours had at least 25 or 30 people. Definitely would have been less interactive and harder to hear the guide with that many people.
