I have a close friend who took this tour in 2013 and she has been effervescing about it ever since and insisting that my husband and I experience it. She sent me an email advertisement last week , and since we had a free evening on April 12th, we wanted to go. I purchased our tickets online , but was directed to confirm the date with Bonaventure Journeys, which I did by email. Shannon Scott was so accommodating even though this was so last minute! I was surprised and impressed that he was able to take the time to personally respond and confirm our tickets.
We are recent transplants to the area , and of all the tours we have taken in Savannah, Hilton Head, and Charleston, this was decidedly the very BEST!!!
Shannon Scott is a very interesting young man and a gifted scholar who exudes a passion about his subject. He has a very engaging personality and is able to weave his stories so that the art and history come alive in his telling , as only a master storyteller and teacher can do. The Cemetery itself is magnificent and the art and history positively fascinating. I learned so much about the history of the area in the most delightful way--- and to think the stories were about death and dying and cycles of life, not exactly "uplifting" subjects!!! Yet Shannon presented them in such a respectful, compassionate, vibrant way that his words became pictures in my mind. The entire group appeared mesmerized by his presentations and paid rapt attention for the whole time! It was a GREAT experience and one we hope to do again when guests visit.
The website is quite specific about wearing closed toe shoes and bringing insect repellant. I HIGHLY recommend that the instructions be followed!! I was surprised how so many in our group were in sandals (there are ants) and were swatting at mosquitoes and sand gnats , particularly when we were near the river. We were prepared , so the bugs did not bother us at all.
DO NOT MISS this tour if you are in Savannah!!! You will not be sorry!
