I had a really fun time surfing but, having had a few lessons before, I'd say the level of tuition wasn't that great and it wasn't especially safety conscious.
Firstly there were nine of us with only one instructor (it seems this is because a second instructor was meant to turn up but didn't - he came an hour late then kept pushing me into waves that weren't really waves...wasn't really adding a lot of value!).
There was no explanation of how to catch waves, no warning about rip tides, no warning not to walk behind people (more than once I had to skip catching a wave as someone in the class was walking between me and the shore without looking!) we drifted a long way from our starting point without the instructor noticing... I suppose Fun Surf LA don't need to worry about any of that though as they made us sign an exclusion notice that absolved them for liability for our death or injury, even in the event of their gross negligence (which wouldn't even be close to lawful in the UK). Even the website wasn't that secure as it left my details on there after I'd booked!
If you're relatively new and just want to hire equipment and have limited supervision then Fun Surf LA might represent good value for money for you - but I wouldn't recommend it otherwise.
