One of the top highlights of our recent trip to the Southwest was taking the Sunrise tour with Monument Valley Tribal Tours with our guide Reever. We highly recommend both!
Since we were able to watch the sunset from our balcony at the View Hotel, we chose to take the sunrise tour. Reever was at the hotel - on time as promised - in a warm SUV, and the three of us entered the park by 7:00AM.
The scenery is as spectacular as imagined. Reever did an excellent job of being at the right place as the sun was coming up and we have hundreds of photos to prove it.
But besides the sheer beauty of the valley, the biggest take away from our sunrise tour was what we learned about the Navajo culture. Reever is an enthusiastic ambassador for his heritage, sharing his knowledge of its traditions, spirituality, and customs. And being a small group, we had the wonderful opportunity to ask a lot of questions, that Reever was more than willing to answer.
The tour was a much better way to see the valley than doing a “self-drive”; we were able to access parts that are not open to the public and our guide helped us better understand why it is considered to be sacred ground to the Navajo people.
