Just returned from Oahu where we took the opportunity to enjoy surfing lessons from Big Wave Dave's Surf Shop in Waikiki. It was the last full day of a 16 day tour of both Kauai and Oahu, and provided some of the most positive memories of a sensational trip. We paid for a group lesson for myself (49), and my two oldest sons (22) and (19). We live in the mountains and have snowboarded extensively, but as for surfing, we had absolutely zero experience. Our session was actually just the three of us with Ronson, a great young man who works as an instructor. Ronson made sure we all had a great time and was encouraging throughout. He was universal in sharing the Spirit of surfing aloha through the entire time, and all of us were able to get up and experience of surfing firsthand. It is easy to see why many devote their lives to this exhilarating sport. We spent time with Dave and other staff members in the shop as well. The shop, while small, has some top quality merchandise- check out the pineapple Aloha flat-brimmed Aloha caps, just saying. The only negative for me is that the $80 for the photo package and CD came across as a hustle. Nevertheless, it was an experience I wanted to remember long term. And Dave and the crew kept the conversation and hospitality going while we waited for our DVD to be burned. Importantly, as well, was that Dave imparted a key lesson: When we asked how long he had been running the store, I made a wisecrack something along the lines that they ought to have a store motto something to the effect of "Serving Haoles since the 80s." And without deviating or blinking an eye, Dave responded that racist messaging such as that had no place anywhere in or around his business, whether joking or otherwise. And at that point, he reminded me that good customer service involves valuing everybody, and appreciating their patronage. It was a great reminder for me that even as a joke, we benefit when we get to serve others. They will make your experience a great one. Don't hesitate to book Waikiki surfing lessons with Dave and crew! And thanks again, Ronson- you made our day truly terrific! #SurfingAloha
