As a former actor, I've worked on many movie studio lots, but Warner Brothers has always been my favorite for it's rich history.
So when a friend came to town I thought of this tour as a great LA treat--and it is!
Unlike the zoo that is Universal, the WB tour feels intimate and personal. From parking ($15) but easy in a well-designed structure, to taking the elevator directly into the elegantly designed tour lobby, to fast and easy check in, every part of the process is well-thought-out, respectful, and designed to give you a first-hand look at a real working movie and TV studio.
The trams hold only 12 people, so each group is small. You can tell the guide (Jake was ours, both friendly and knowledgeable), what you're interested in, and they'll tell you specifics about your interests along the way--like where Busby Berkeley shot his famous extravaganzas, or where specific Gilmore Girls scenes took place.
You don't just ride the tram--you stop at the famous "town square" (used in movies like "The Music Man," and "The Gilmore Girls," and walk around seeing the backlot facades, and even go inside some of the houses that are working sets.
You also walk through a soundstage with sets so real you'll be surprised. We toured the "All American" soundstage and each set was so detailed it felt like a real place. (You don't get to tour soundstages where filming is taking place as that would be too disruptive to the production).
You're then taken to a Central Perk cafe where you can eat, and get your picture taken sitting on the original set (also on the "Big Bang" original set. You can learn about the various crafts that go into moviemaking, be part of special effects like greenscreens. You can take your own pics, the friendly staff will take pictures for you, and there's a paid option to get professional pics (but if you use your own camera you'll get great shots).
Another tram takes you to the famous "Friends" fountain (though not in the original location) and you can sit on a sofa and have them take your picture. The last stop is full or Harry Potter and DC film costumes and interactive exhibits.
Last, but certainly not least, have your picture taken holding a real oscar--no extra charge.
I was surprised how personal this felt and how much I enjoyed this tour. My out of town guests loved it, too. The basic tour is a great value. Highly recommended.
