We very recently returned form a fabulous trip to witness the New England "fall" in all its glory. Our trip included three days in Newport Rhode Island, given its notable sailing history, famous Cliff Walk, Ocean Drive and the Mansions of the Gilded Age. Our weather was spectacular, and so we decided to take a sunset cruise around the harbour area, which actually reminded me of San Francisco in its sheer scale and overall impact. The Jamestown Suspension Bridge is a sight to behold at any time of the day.
The cruise lasted 90 minutes and the boat holds a maximum of 50 people. It is a powered vessel which moved very smoothly around the harbour area while our host for the evening provided a very interesting and at times humorous commentary on all of the sights, including a valuable historical perspective. There was a cash bar on board, although included in the price was a glass of bubbly with which to toast the sunset, and a "Stuffey", which is a local lobster based speciality......and very tasty it was too! I am a sailor and would in many ways have preferred to go on one of the schooners offering a similar trip. However, my wife is not good if the going gets choppy in any way, and she was also afraid of being asked to "pull a rope" - hence we opted for a motor cruise. With hindsight this was a good decision, due mainly to the route taken and the excellent commentary and refreshments on board.
Gansett is a very nice company. Very welcoming, friendly yet professional all at the same time. The boat was spotlessly clean and very nicely presented. The trip was timed superbly with numerous photo opportunities. All-in-all we had a thoroughly enjoyable and very memorable evening. And at US$46 for two, including an $8 discount for using a local voucher attached to the local tourist map, I thought it represented VERY good value. I would highly recommend it the next time you're in town!
