Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon

Super knowledgeable tour guide Jerry with great personality. Loved the stories he told of Pirates and notorious people who lived in Charleston. Four corners of law story was great.

The tour is very scarce in actual facts. We visited 4 locations (stood next to 3) went into the 4th - the dungeon. The locations were hardly a sight to see. The first one being an alleyway where back in the day enslaved people laid brick by hand (was there any other way at that time..? I didn’t understand what was special about that alley) the other one was a hotel that burned down at one point… also a pretty common occurrence. the walks in between locations took as much time as the informational part itself and the guide didn’t give any info along the way. I also tried googling some of the persons mentioned in the stories ( like the ash man/the gray man) and none of them came up, other than the dungeon part. The gray man of South Carolina is a person/character but has nothing to do with the location we visited. It left me with a feeling that I just paid 45$ for some stories someone made up on the spot. Maybe that is not true but there was no sources/evidence to support any of it.

Hello, we are sorry that the tour did not meet expectations. As a start to addressing your concerns, yes we go into one location. We are the only company in Charleston with the privilege of taking our tours into the Dungeon. We supplement the tour by telling ghost stories around the visit to the Dungeon. The story told in the alley is a very well-known legend relating to the Gullah people of the Lowcountry who are the descendants who laid the bricks you mentioned. The Gray Man of South Carolina is different from the Gray Man of Charleston (I know this is confusing). Finally, the stories were not made up. Google searching ghost stories is a fool's errand. You are looking for sources and evidence of ghost stories. The history behind the stories is searchable, but the ghost stories themselves are not which is why they are ghost stories. If there was sources and evidence for their existence then there would be no debate whether they are real or not. We are more than happy to offer a refund for the tour. Feel free to reach out to our Tour Guide Manager, Andrew Kuhn, at [email protected] to discuss further.

The dungeon is only one stop of this tour. There are other stops along the route to get to the dungeon, but there could have been more stories told while inside the dungeon itself. I'd recommend going through the museum above to get a deeper understanding of the dungeon itself. Be aware there are some mannequin figures in the dungeon so it makes it a little creepier.
