Colonial Williamsburg is a painstaking recreation of American life shortly before the Revolutionary War. It features a mix of restored original buildings, and faithful recreations. Local actors offer tours and perform as historical figures.
For me though the highlight is definitely the expert craftmanship showed by the various tradespeople on site practicing the art of colonial manufacturing. You can watch experts ply their trade as gunsmiths, jointers, weavers, blacksmiths, seamstresses, etc., and then buy those same goods which they produce.
Even with COVID a remarkable amount of Williamsburg is still available to tour, although the wait times to view the governors palace was pushing 2 hours during my visit. At the visitors center signs everywhere warn you "it's almost impossible to do it all in one day", but with COVID restrictions my wife and I were able to see and experience everything in about 8 hours (including that 2 hours wait for the palace).
