It was fun but not what we expected. This is a public highway. Anyone with a vehicle can go on this highway and you don't need a four wheel drive to do so. If you are in Denali without your own vehicle then this would be a great way to get away from the cruise/bus tour activities and do something different. If you have your own vehicle, even if it's a motor home, go on your own.
When we booked we were told this tour would be "backcountry in a four wheel drive jeep" and using "Old Denali Highway" to us this meant off road or a highway no longer for public use. Not so. We should've gotten clarification.
The pros: nice jeep that's enclosed so good for any weather. Knowledgeable guides. Chance to see wildlife and pick blueberries. Good bathroom break at a park in the middle of the tour.
The cons: you can do it on your own without paying. Overly talkative guide on the CB radio so very little talk amongst those in the jeep. 4-5 people per jeep which can leave you with rude and unfriendly strangers for 4-5 hours. The speed keeps you from being able to get good pictures while moving and if you're the only one that wants to stop you are out of luck.
