My wife and I did this tour along with maybe 20 others in a nice new little airconditioned bus, which was driven by our guide and host, Matt. First, Matt and his family have deep roots in the community's history, and Matt has a deep passion for knowing and sharing this history. Other than a couple of hours of free time we had to explore exhibits, Matt found ways to endlessly share his local knowledge of the history and the fauna.
Not only did he brilliantly lead us through the two museums and the battlefield, but stopped many times along the road to share really interesting things about what had taken place there, or what was growing there, and its place in the settler's history. Being Boston, I knew really just about what had happened in these era's in my area, without ever really understanding what role these early Virginia settlements had. Now, I know so much thanks to Matt!
We met at 7:45 at the bus, and didn't get back to our car until almost 6:00 (I think), but I am glad we did this; it was literally priceless, as there was no possible way, I would ever be able to obtain the information that is in Matt's head.
