We started out on a drizzly day to go see whales. The boat is large, comfortable, dry and has snacks available. After a ride of about 15 minutes, we broke out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and with clearing skies we followed a pod of 5 whales for a while, then went off to see another whale who got much closer to the boat. The naturalists on board are very knowledgeable and shared lots of information about the whales with whom they are very familiar. After our time with the whales, the trip back made some stops to view eagles and seals.

We travelled from Florida with the mission of seeing orcas. When we checked in for our tour, the captain said they knew where 2 different pods were located and he chose the one less congested (further South - away from the boats who travelled from Vancouver). The captain knows the waters well and has a solid network of other captains and locals who share information as they track the whales. They had a very efficient boarding process and there was a focus on safety that we appreciated. The boat was equipped with binoculars for guests to use, had adequate seating for around 40 guests with the majority of seating inside a temperature controlled cabin, and there were two naturalist provided by the company that told us the history of the whales. We found the whales fairly quickly and watched them for at least two hours. We kept the boat at a safe distance but the whales did swim over to our boat and some even swam directly under our boat. The magic of the experience is something we will always remember. In our tour there were single travelers, young and mature couples, and families with young children and all had a great time. If the whales are in the area, I feel confident that the group from Orcas Island eclipse charters will have you on them.

I recommend Orcas Island Eclipse Charters for whale watching tours out of Orcas Island. The boat was large and well equipped. The captain had lots of experience in the waters around the San Juan islands. The crew had two naturalists on board that studied wildlife in the area, so they could answer any questions about whales and other animals. We had to go a ways, but the captain found some Orca whales. We followed a pod of transients for about an hour. We also saw eagles, seals, porpoises, and various waterfowl. Great trip.
