My first time to Alaska. We booked three years ago to come to Alaska to see/photograph bears. Being a keen fisherman in the UK, I wanted to squeeze in a day when I could experience the legendary Alaskan fishing, rather than just watching the bears do it! After a lot of internet trawling, I came across FishHound Expeditions. Right from the very first contact, Adam and Kat were brilliant, giving me advice and details of options. As it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I decided to go for the full day fly-in, float out private trip. We got it all booked up, but then COVID hit and everything had to be put on hold. Again, Adam was superb. He readily agreed to hold over the day, not once but twice, and was extremely helpful in looking at repeated re-booking of the day. Third time lucky! I finally arrived in Alaska in July 2022 and met my guide for the day, Shane, at the airport in Talkeetna on a beautiful sunny day, following rain a couple of days earlier. Everything was provided, waders, fishing rod (I think you call it a pole?), all the flies etc and loads of optimism (unlike many ghillies in Scotland, who seem to think that being miserable about prospects is part of the job description. The first excitement was seeing everything (including the boat) being loaded onto a helicopter. We took off and immediately got a fantastic view of Mount Denali - North America's highest peak - rising above miles of unbroken forest. We tracked a silty glacial river upstream for about 20 minutes, turning off up Clear Creek to land on a narrow shingle beach by the river. Shane set me to fish whilst he assembled the float boat. First cast and we had a fish on the bank! For me, being used to a double handed spey casting fly rod, the Alaskan technique of a single handed rod and weighted line with a huge fly, or a bead to represent fish roe, was a challenge in itself but Shane was an immensely supportive and informative tutor, as well as having the patience of a saint! Several beautiful fish later, Shane finally had time to finish getting the boat ready and we set off down stream. Brilliant advice and guidance all the time from Shane, as he taught me how to fish the river whilst guiding us down the various rapids, pools and holes, stopping to fish key spots from the bank as well as holding the boat over expectant lies. I felt absolutely safe at all times, despite the water being quite high after the recent rains. It just got better and better, seeing red king salmon resting or working up the streams, hooking wonderful fit and fighting rainbow trout and Dolly Varden (a new one for me) as we went. Everything was returned, so we left the river as we found it, and Shane was hugely respectful of the fish, which was just great to see. A a break for lunch and Shane turned into a chef - producing a BBQ and cooking up some delicious Caribou sausages to give us energy for the afternoon, whilst we watched a pair of eagle circling overhead. There was just so much action the whole way down this beautiful pristine river and, to top it off, Shane spotted a family of black bear in the woods on the river bank as we floated past. He immediately jumped into the river to stop the boat so we could see them before they scuttled off into the dense undergrowth. What a treat! Finally, we came to the end of the clear water and joined the glacial flow. Too silty to fish and not quite as hard work for Shane, navigating boulders, so for the last hour, we gently floated down river and finally had a chance to chat. What a fascinating and knowledgeable person, as well as a superb fishing guide. It was a real pleasure to spend some time with him, learning about life in Alaska, the river system and the whole ecosystem - as well as tips on how to spend our remaining time in the area and the best route to take back to Anchorage, leaving the boring main highway and heading over mountain passes instead (we did this Shane and were singing your praises all the way along the route - thank you for the recommendation!). And so the day had to come to an end but what an experience. In over 55 years of fishing, I have never had a day like this before. So many totally wild fish of several different species, different techniques to learn and a real expert there to teach me, scenery to die for and all the wildlife to see as well. I feel that I should end with an apology to Shane, who put up so well with this stupid Englishman who has been brought up fishing for Atlantic Salmon, where we are told never to strike. The advice, when feeling a fish on the end of the line, is to keep absolutely still and think "God save the Queen .... and all her Corgis" before gently lifting the rod tip. As a result, my striking reactions were seriously slow. I caught loads of fish during the day - more than on any other day's fishing I have ever been on - but the count should have been higher. And, of course, the ones that got away were undoubtedly the biggest! A huge thank you to Adam, Kat and Shane for the most superb day's fishing I will probably have in my entire life. Very very special memories to take home. If anyone is thinking about doing this, don't think any longer, get it booked!

Andrew, my apologies for the delay in responding to your review which we thank you immensely for! I'm so happy that after 3 years we finally made it happen. I'm equally stoked to hear the fish gods blessed you and Shane to have such a good trip. I hope the rest of your travels went well and we hope to get you out fishing again with us!

My wife and I were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary and we couldn’t have been more excited. Our guide Laura was excellent and she had the utmost patience with 2 beginners. They are the real deal and would highly recommend them to everyone.

Fished two days on Willow Creek. First day we did walk in wade fishing and the 2nd day we did a float trip. Different sections of the river. Will was our guide and did a great job of teaching us the river and how to fish it. We easily caught more than 20 rainbows/grayling mix each day. Salmon where in the river but were not biting. Was my first time to catch a trout on a mouse fly. Will do that again. Pretty exciting. Would fish with FishHounds again. Two great days on the water.

That's awesome you got one to eat a mouse! It is truly one of the coolest things in fly fishing to watch a trout eat a mammal! Will is an mazing guide! Thank you for supporting our company and we hope to get you out on the water again!
