Staying on Hilton Head Island for the month, and with neither of us ever having been to Savannah, my husband and I decided this would be the best way to head to the famous historical city. This day trip is exactly as the brochure describes and we were very impressed overall.
It was a Thursday and the boat was absolutely packed — we were fortunate to find a seat, so do make sure you board early. We sat on the left-hand side of the ferry on the top deck heading into Savannah as well as heading back to the island. Most of that which the captain points out along the way to and from Savannah (including dolphins!), are on the port side — so we think we lucked out there! Do make sure you take sunscreen as it can get quite warm/sunny if you’re in the open air seating.
Note the timing of the ferry is to the second, so do make sure you are on board on time! We left at exactly 9AM, arrived in Savannah at exactly 10:45AM, and departed again at exactly 3PM.
We took advantage of the discounted Savannah trolley tickets on board, but note there are other options once you exit the ferry so this isn’t absolutely necessary. Your photo will also be taken upon boarding and they will provide a framed print-out on the return trip. The photos are $12 each and although they were beautifully presented, the photos themselves were not great quality (we didn’t buy ours), though we did notice a few other passengers purchasing them.
One thing we really loved about the ferry trip was that they take a completely different route on the way back to Hilton Head Island. It was through the narrower waterways and around Daufuskie Island — and there was plenty to see. The water was very calm and the captain did a wonderful job of maneuvering past the larger ships.
Lots to see along the way and a wonderful way to get to Savannah for the day. My husband took some fantastic time-lapse videos heading out of Hilton Head Island and they look great! This trip was 100% worth the price paid for the ticket and we wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.
