Історична затока Хіло та SUP-пригоди на острові Кокос

Огляд
The only tour of it's kind in Hilo, makes this 2 hour adventure a memorable one. Coconut Island (Mokuola in Hawaiian) is favorite with the local kids, for its stone tower from which they jump in the ocean. The proximity to Queen Liliuokalani Gardens gives views of the Japanese gardens and Hilo Bayfront and Mauna Loa Crater as a backdrop.

Starting with the Pro's of our adventure: Isaiah was a great adventure guide. He was very knowledgeable of Coconut Island and the history behind it. He was patient with us and didnt rush us to get around the island. He stayed close to us the entire time to make sure we were doing good. Con's: My daughter and I were expected to carry the big & heavy standup paddle board from the shop location to the water (& back to the shop after the adventure ended). We were told it was "about a block away" but it actually seems close to about 100 yards give/take. Now...my 15 yr old daughter is petite and weighs less than 100lbs. She sure as heck wasnt able to pickup - much less carry that paddleboard all-the-way to the water. I struggled with the paddleboard and had to stop every 10 yards or so to switch arms that I was carrying the paddleboard on. Props to Isaiah tho for taking my daughters paddleboard for her and carrying it to the water. It would have been nice if the shop had some sort of wheely-device thing to place the paddleboards on to "wheel" them over to the water vs. expecting the paying customer to do that. Or better yet, have the paddleboards waiting for the customer over by the water once the check-in process is complete at the shop. The adventure sure didnt start off in the right way but turned out to be a fun excursion. Just something to consider.

We had an excellent SUP tour with Dylan, who is super kind and informative! The tour started bright and early at the Hilo Ocean Adventures storefront, which is actually an awesome location with parking and a perfect location that’s right on the water. Dylan ensured that we were prepped and ready to go with an overview of the day and super stable paddle boards. We were able to launch from the beach a short walk from the storefront and had a beautiful view of Mauna Kea once on the bay. Dylan answered all of our questions and pointed out the Hawksbill Turtles swimming in the bay. We spotted lots of fish and a spotted eagle ray, not to mention a couple of Ne ne on the beach! A huge thanks to Dylan and the Hilo Ocean Adventures team for a fantastic morning full of thoughtful suggestions and wonderful conversation.

Adam was a great instructor and guide. We were all first timers for SUP and he had us on our way in no time! The paddle to Coconut Island was so beautiful and once there he lifeguarded our teenagers for jumping off of the US Navy dive tower there. Great experience.
