Start at DIRECTOR PARK

Our downtown Portland, Oregon walking tours are engaging, well-paced and colorful: the Best of the City! It’s a weird city, but there are stories in every building, park and brick. We’ve organized our city’s best things -- and of course, it’s most complicated and conflicted, as well. In an ever-changing world we continuously change the story of the city. We walk about 2 miles/3 km.

Much of Portland’s history can be told through the buildings and street layouts including the prioritization of parks in the city center. It’s not a dry history: full of back-room deals, early deaths and greed; and then there were hippies!

How did Portland become the 1st city on the West Coast with a fine art museum? How did the city's early cultural reputation influence its mid-20th century; and how did it become such a lightning rod for racial justice protests? We'll discuss what was, is, and will be the soul of the city.

it was so great to join such an intimate group for two hours of exploring the center of Portland! my guide seemed to know exactly how to find the three of us at the corner of Director Park — the directions were easy to follow. then we set out to learn about the history of the city’s architecture and art and culture, but with a context to national and world history that I found engaging and also super helpful to think about the way the west coast weaves into the story of today, and the connection to international movements. I’m so glad I got this long term local’s perspective!!

Hi there Renee, I am sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy the tour. We typically find that our guests very much enjoy learning about buildings and architecture, as well as other history about art, culture and indigenous histories I am sure your guide shared with you. As all of our tours walk through the center of downtown I am not sure what we can do to increase the diversity of our tour; sadly we cannot meet everyone’s needs. If you visit again I would suggest a nature focused tour.
