I was literally speechless when I walked through the gates of the fort. It really felt like stepping back in time.
My family and I love history, so we had studied a lot before our visit. We went through the museum building part fairly quickly, but even then a lot of information and artifacts still caught our eyes. This place was very well done. This was by far the best living history museum I have seen. I know this place cost a lot of money, but it was money well invested in teaching the visitors about the beginnings of our nation. They even had some disclaimers and information on how they know certain things, and how certain things may not have happened like they were told. As a history person, I appreciate that.
If you don't know a lot about the history of the area, or in general, I would suggest you start your Jamestown adventure here before going on to Historic Jamestowne. There is a lot more in-depth information and descriptions here.
If you know your history, it was such an amazing experience seeing the actual place, then walking through the gates as it would have looked. Seeing the ships, I could only imagine the fear and confusion of the Native Americans. Seeing the tight quarters, I would struggle to imagine months of voyage across the sea. The Powhatan village was also a very unique experience to see.
