Completed in 1941 under the direction of Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln, the sculpture's roughly 60-ft.-high granite faces depict U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The site also features a museum with interactive exhibits. At sunset the rangers provide a progam that honors our veterans, including a patriotic movie and the lighting of the mountain.

Hi Rosemary - You timed your tour to the Hills just right. Custer State Park is full of buffalo/bison during the spring calving season. It's pretty cool to see hundreds of the little red calves running around the park. Thank you for taking time to review. Be Well - Rich

The Jeep safari tour through Custer State Park was a great tour - we were able to see lots of animals, including baby bison. We saw beautiful views and had plenty of photo opportunities. The Jeep was comfortable and the guide was knowledgeable. The guide expressed sympathy for the way the government treated the Native Americans, but he also expressed sympathy for the KKK. Near the end of the tour, he shared that he was friends with people in the local KKK, that “they’re not as bad as they’re made out to be”, that “they’re just people”, that “they’ve actually done some good for the community”, and “the Mexican cartel is much worse”. I was stunned and incredibly uncomfortable. This was irrelevant to the tour so it didn’t need to even be discussed. I’m from the Deep South and have never even heard someone talk like that. An otherwise enjoyable tour was stained with this sympathetic talk of a hate group. I’m uncomfortable even writing about it but feel that it is necessary that the company is aware and that other customers are aware.

Hi Meredith - I am so sorry that one of my employees decided to share with you his political and moral views. I am mortified that something like this would ever be discussed during one of our tours. Thank you for taking time to speak with me about this on the phone. I appreciate the opportunity to apologize to you directly. After taking time to investigate the information, action has been taken. The employee who made those comments is no longer with our company. Everyone has the right to their personal views. But our employees do not have permission to share their politics, religion or biases with our guests. Open-Top-Tours is clear on this when new guides are trained and these rules are reinforced throughout the tour season. I apologize to everyone . . . Open-Top-Tours has never and will never tolerate this kind of conduct. Sincerely - Rich
