We booked this tour through Juneau Shore Tours. We were picked up by minibus at the end of the ship’s jetty and taken to the airfield. The trip caters for all fitness/ability levels.
When we arrived we each had to get on the weighing scales, we had special over shoes fitted, to ensure our grip on the ice, and we were taken through the safety aspects of the trip. We were then told the order we would get on to the helicopter and where we would sit.
Our pilot, Mike, was brilliant. He got the six of us all sorted and we took off towards the Mendenhall Glacier and Mike gave us a commentary as we flew. There was some low cloud, so we followed the line of the coast for a while, then headed inland. Great views all the way.
Wow!! The glacier seemed to appear from nowhere. What a magnificent sight! We flew in over the amazingly blue snout of the glacier and then up along the curving glacial valley. Some of the boulders in the moraine where the size of cars, yet looked so small. As we moved up the valley, the helicopter flew lower and we landed on the glacier. As a friend was in another helicopter, we landed together.
We had plenty of time to walk around where we had landed, guided by our pilots. The sheer scale of the valley and the glacier was stunning. Great that there were so few of us up there. The other helicopters that had left at the same time had landed elsewhere.
Good views of Juneau on the way back, with the cruise ships at the dockside.
A brilliant trip, very friendly staff and pilots, very well organised. Loved it!
