La Plata Canyon Jeep Tour, Waterfall's & Views ~ Half Day

Book with the best and highest consumer-rated company in Durango, Co.Come and experience the La Plata Canyon tour also known as “Kennebec Pass”. This tour will take you up to 12,000 feet at or near the tree line. We get to see the amazing geology of how this canyon was carved out by ancient glaciers leaving the beautiful canyon along the way. We will get the chance to see wildlife such as deer, bears, marmots, birds, elk, and maybe even the elusive mountain lion. All of which have been spotted on our tours. La Plata Canyon is 20 minutes west of Durango, Colorado, and has a history of old Ghost Towns and plenty of old mines to chat about along the way. An absolute bucket list item!

What to expect:
about a 20-minute drive on the highway to the entrance to the canyon
dirt and dust~ this is an open-air vehicle

An experienced guide who knows the area and roads very well

We liked our tour guide but overall wasn't impressed with the trip. It was cut nearly an hour short and was one way in and the same way out. There wasn't much to look at and the trip was very rough. From previous experiences with other companies this one for sure falls at the bottom. Disappointed and had hoped for more especially with the cost. Hopefully it was just because of all the snow still on the ground and the avalanche damage.

One of the previous reviews listed several problems they encountered on their tour. We rode in the 4x4 truck. Yes, it was rough--it's a mountain trail for most of the way. And the vehicle is a 4x4--not a car on a smooth surface. But we were out in the mountains away from people and got to see what's really going on in those mountains. We didn't see much wildlife, but we got to see plenty of yellow aspens and how some people live in the mountains. It was a sunny, pleasant day just right for outdoor activities. Gorgeous vistas up there. Kelly was our driver. He's funny and interesting and made several stops for us to take pictures. Be warned--no bathrooms. Also there is a 10 minute ride on the highway to La Plata Canyon. We got a couple of calls from the company making sure we knew where to meet them and if we were all set. We appreciated the contact information.

The terrain and the open air 4x4 vehicle gives the adventurer the chance to experience the history of the difficulty of the former habitants of the La Plata Mountains while taking in the beauty of the canyon. The scenery was beautiful but vehicle was deplorable . The truck fumes in the passenger area were horrible. The truck was falling apart from the poor muffler to the state of filth in the truck seating area for passengers. The suspension system on the truck was deplorable and provided us with a most uncomfortable ride. I would not recommend this tour unless the vehicle was updated. New vehicle with adequate suspension system and cleanliness.

Dear Terry P, Welcome to Trip Advisor. We see we were your first review and unfortunately did not meet your expectations and received the lowest score of 1 star. Hopefully future companies you review get the chance to work with you to rectify your concerns prior to getting the lowest score. We take our customer satisfaction very seriously and only with we had the chance to work with you after your tour. We are sorry we did not meet your expectations and wish you would have talked to us directly after you got of your trip. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the beautiful scenery in the La Plata Canyon. Some of your comments warrant a full explanation. Allow us to respond. The suspension system- Our open air vehicle has 10 ply tires, after market heavy duty shocks, heavy duty leaf springs and a fully functional air bag suspension system that allows us adjust the ride height by the terrain we are encountering. To say the suspension system on the vehicle is deplorable is not accurate. Our vehicle has passed a rigorous annual inspection and is on a regular maintenance plan reviewed by the State of Colorado Public Utilities Commission. What is accurate is that you did not like the suspension. The poor muffler- Our vehicle has a Chevy 8.1 Liter Vortex engine that delivers 330hp and over 450 lb.-ft. Torque. This vehicle just simply has a growl to it because of how much power it can deliver. This is why we chose this vehicle type because we wanted the most power without having to go to a diesel engine that you would find on a Hummer tour. Ours is a gas powered vehicle. The seats-We offer a 4x4 tour that takes guest over 11,000 feet on a 4x4 only road. The seats are padded with 4 inch foam and UV resistant vinyl. We take you up on a 4x4 road, with dirt, dust, mud, water/stream crossing. You can get dirty on this tour. We offer, a rain fly on the vehicle if we need to put up, splash jackets if it rains or if you get cold and blankets. Please do not put on your Sundays best to take this tour. We were a bit surprised to see how dressed up you were for this tour type of tour offering. We should have asked more questions about your expectations when you booked your tour. We would have recommended our private 4x4 tour in one of our Jeep Wranglers. These vehicles have AC, windows that go up and down and have a cabin air filter to assist with dust. This would have provided the best comfort you can get on a 4x4 tour. Sincerely, David Moler
