Counselors were attentive but my impression from watching a session is that there weren't enough of them and campers were spread over too large an area (some in water, some in lagoon, some on beach) for them to effectively cover all the kids in the water. We pulled our 8-year-old after watching two of her friends drift away on surfboards far outside the camp zone (we're talking a hundred yards or more downbeach and beyond the surfline, pic attached) until several minutes later a counselor was dispatched to paddle down to them and bring them to shore. Had they become distressed in the water they were far beyond a lifeguard's ability to hear or get to them quickly. We alerted camp leadership to the incident, with pictures, and received no response. All-around unacceptable for kids' water sports.
In short, too slapdash an operation for beginning surfers without a lot of confidence in the ocean. Could be fine for teens. Again, didn't seem to be the fault of the counselors but the level of staffing and the camp biting off more than it could chew in terms of younger kids.
