Seeing those amazing creatures was breathtaking, and worth every penny spent.
I read the previously posted negative reviews, and it sounds like it was based on expectations. This is not a snorkel swim. You are in the water with a mask and snorkel, holding onto what is essentially a floating surfboard that has a pvc rail around it. It also has magenta coloured lights - other companies use bright white lights. I can't speak to how many rays they saw, but we say plenty - logic says that the rays probably don't like the bright lights. They are magnificent creatures, and HUGE, and they can get within inches of your face while they barrel roll upside down while feeding on the plankton. But you are holding onto these rails (with a pool noodle under your knees to keep your legs up) for a couple of reasons. First and foremost is the safety of the rays. The second is the safety of the swimmers. I could hardly imagine having 50-100 people swimming in the area, all trying to see the rays - that would be chaos.
There are apparently two main areas that used by all the different companies, one with 5 mooring spots (up by the Kona Airport) and the other with 3 (closer to downtown Kona). I got the impression that it's a battle to get a spot. So you do get out there fairly early. And if it's a little rocky, I can see how one that get's motion sickness will get a little green. But the crew had ginger candies that seemed to help those who were feeling uneasy on our trip - no one threw up so I guess they worked. The wait was longer than expected, but we saw a wonderful Hawaii sunset, and the crew (who were great all trip) put out pineapple and water (suggestion to Capt. Dan - more variety to eat and drink - even it it's not the crews' beer). Remember folks, these are creatures of nature. They don't always do what you want, like show up when you want them to.
Bottom line, we (group of 3 adults and 3 kits) all had a great time, an experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives. We even saw some dolphins playing in our wake going out to the spot. I would definitely recommend Capt. Dan and Manta Adventures to anyone who is trying to decide who to choose which operator to use.
