Muthurajawela Marsh
Muthurajawela is the largest saline coastal peat bog in Sri Lanka. The Marsh together with the Negombo Lagoon form an integrated coastal wetland eco-system with marsh lagoon complex itself estimated to have originated around the year 5000 BC. The northern section of the marsh covering an area of 1,777ha was declared a sanctuary in July 1996 under the fauna & flora protection ordinance. The marsh is a major local and tourist attraction, primarily used for sightseeing and boating tours, and the area also supports local agriculture and forestry. Visitors to the region are guided through the sanctuary areas by the staff of the Muthurajawela Marsh Centre to avoid serious harm to the marsh ecosystem.

Picked up at the hotel by a very friendly driver who waited during the boat trip and dropped us at a different place on our request. The boat trip started at a very nice and idyllic place. After a short paddle through a narrow brook, we entered the Muthurajawela marsh and saw many birds, monkeys, fishes and a water monitor lizzard (varaan in Dutch) during a 2-hour wonderfull trip. The shipper was super friendly and answered all our questions. He even 'protected' us when 'being ambushed' by a group of hungry monkeys during a watermelon and coconut break in a small lagune. Even our daughters - who weren't eager to do this trip - were impressed. Really recommended!

Beautiful morning, Shanaka our guide was really helpful and informative. Unfortunately we were super jet lagged & booked later in the morning. If you book, go for sunrise when all the birds get up for the day, you will see alot more. Still saw some amazing birds & travelled through the mangroves. 5*
