Take a 5.5 hours round-trip, down to Plantation Country and explore one plantations. Whitney Museum Plantation: During the 90-minute self-guided audio walking tour, visitors will gain a unique perspective on the lives of the enslaved people on a Louisiana sugar plantation, learning their stories through the real oral histories recorded by the Federal Writers Project during the Depression.

Have you ever wanted to enjoy an enchanting boat ride across a swamp? If your answer is yes, as it probably is, then the place to go is New Orleans via our guided swamp tours. We take you across all the heavenly Cajun Swamp where you take a 90 minutes low-speed boat ride. The Cajun Captains will navigate their way through the back swamp. You will learn about Louisiana Wetlands, the inhabitants of the swamp, the life and habits of the American Alligators. Our experience Captains will take you back to the history of Louisiana Bayou and Swamp exploration days.

Whitney Plantation

(CLOSE ON TUESDAYS) is on the National Register of Historic Places, the site includes the last surviving example of a true French Creole Barn, what is believed to be the oldest detached kitchen in Louisiana, and the Big House, considered the earliest and best preserved raised Creole cottage in Louisiana, all built by slaves. With the original structures nestled in a working sugar cane field, visitors are sure to marvel at the authentic representation presented at Whitney. Through these restored buildings, museum exhibits, memorial artwork and thousands of first-person slave narratives, Whitney Plantation gives a voice and respect to the slaves, who lived, worked, and died here.

This was an interesting day but a lot of driving. We went in March so weather was cooler, imagine the swamp could be uncomfortable in the height of summer. The plantation was interesting but our guided tour started late and with the time restriction to get back on the bus we had to miss half of the tour. Our guide had a very strong southern accent so was difficult to understand at times. I would recommend getting the self guided tour so you make sure to see everything. We stopped at Oak Valley plantation for refreshments and kind of wished we had gone to that instead. I thought the swamp tour would be in a more swampy area if that makes sense, it was basically canal ways leading to a lake. Saw loads of alligators but no other wildlife really. Thought the tour guide was off by talking about how you hunt, skin and demeat an alligator when you are seeing these magnificent animals! The driver of the bus was great.

We had a fill in driver but he was kind and welcoming and never felt nervous with his driving. The Whitney itself I enjoyed very much, based on my research it focused more on slave life than the families of the households and that’s what I wanted to learn about. The pontoon boat tour was a blast. Wild ride.

This trip was such a great opportunity. I have already started spreading the word to family and friends. The bus ride with Mrs. D was very informative. If you are looking to look at some real history visit the Whitney plantation and if you want to enjoy a great boat ride and while on the boat eat some really good shrimp and I mean good shrimp go on a pontoon boat ride. I loved our captain!
